At 3 months of age, our first child, Gabriel, was diagnosed with a rare liver disease and had his first of many surgeries. Although the doctors tried to save his liver, they were not able to do so and we started to prepare young Gabe for a liver transplant. Karen was chosen as the donor and she and Gabe went into surgery at UCLA Medical Center when Gabe was 10˝ months old.
A few weeks before the transplant, we were introduced to Reiki having only been told that “it’s good for healing”. Although we weren’t expecting much from Reiki we started using it the day after the transplant. We were amazed at how it helped Gabe and Karen who both healed faster than expected. The transplant was successful and now Gabe continues to grow and thrive.
This initial using of Reiki prompted us to learn more and we were subsequently trained in both traditional and non-traditional Reiki. Today, we continue to make Reiki a daily part of our personal lives and our hope is to spread Reiki to as many people as possible. In addition, we teach kung fu, self-defense, t'ai chi, and various chi kung and martial arts classes.
We truly believe that Reiki is for everyone. We have taught hundreds of people with various professions and backgrounds. Our oldest student is 88 and we have given Reiki ability to infants. We have been honored and proud to be teaching Reiki classes nearly every month since arriving in SW Florida in 1997.
